Some Japanese artists designed woodblock prints to be used as calendar illustrations. Additional copies of the design were often printed and sold separately as inexpensive art prints. Most of these calendar prints were relatively small in size (e.g., 150 x 125 mm) and oriented either horizontally or vertically to match the width of the listing of dates and days of the week printed beneath. Two examples of these calendar prints are shown below, one vertically oriented** with a calendar underneath and the second horizontally oriented without the calendar underneath, sold instead as an art print. These two prints are part of the Reader Collection of Japanese Flower-and-Bird Art.

**The vertically oriented print is also called an ex libris print. When pasted into a book it identified the book's owner. In this case the owner was the Arai Book Collection ( 荒井蔵書).
